Luke and Jodie reopen GFC Muay Thai with members' help
The Bury Times visited GFC Muay Thai in October 2024 after members helped Luke Phillips and Jodie Higson get the Bright Street Mill gym open.
Members gave up their own time to carry cement, push wheelbarrows and help with the building work. Jodie told the paper that they would not have done that without real respect for GFC and the people running it. When the Bury Times visited in October 2024, work on the kitchen was still going on, but the training space was ready.
Jodie also spoke about GFC's ladies-only Muay Thai sessions. She explained that women do not need to arrive fit or experienced because everyone works at their own pace. The sessions give members somewhere to train, learn practical skills and get some relief from the pressures of work and family life.
Luke had first appeared in The Bolton News in 2006, when he was nine and had just become GFC's youngest champion. In 2024, the local paper covered him running GFC with Jodie and welcoming members into a facility they had helped build.
