Our next fight to be announced is a 60kg adult Novice bout, GFC’s Kyle Jones v The MMA Academy’s Phil Martindale.
The first of our junior fights are announced today and they are both massive fights. GFC’s two double European champions, Lewis Bentley and Ella Thompstone will be in action.
First up Ella will defend her European crown against Myria Mattaiou from Cyprus. Myria has an impressive resume and is three time Cypriot champion and WPKL World Champion. Ella is well known on the UK fight circuit turning heads on her unbeaten run so far.
Myria’s gym mate, Andreas Loannou will challenge Lewis for the WTKA World title. Lewis has fought everyone in the UK and has beaten numerous foreign opposition on his way to winning two European titles. It’s well and truly time for him to step up and compete for a world title. Andreas is K1 Champion of Cyprus, two time Muay Thai Champion of Cyprus, ISKA World Championships Gold medal 2016 and Silver Medal winner 2018. He was nominated by the WTKA as an opponent for this championship contest so we have no doubt he will up for the challenge!
The first fight to be announced for our own show at the Ashton Masonic Hall on 30th November is an A Class potential cracker. GFC’s Myk Estlick will make his long awaited return to the ring against The MMA Academy’s Rob Robert Mcnee. Perhaps better known in MMA circles Rob actually has a very impressive Thai record with 13 fights 11 wins 1l 1d. He has trained and fought a lot in Thailand. His trainers have been asking for this fight for some time now, so they must be confident! Myk never backs out of a fight, should be a stormer!
Two European titles in two weeks!
Local Bury Thai Boxer Ella Thompstone, a student of St Gabriels School in Bury, continued her meteoric rise in the World of Muay Thai Boxing by winning two European Titles in two weeks during the month of September. On 7th Sept she travelled to Scotland to fight the Belgium champion. Despite giving away age and experience Ella dominated from the start with her superior technique and strength, and despite getting her nose bust from an illegal blow in the second round she went on to win a one sided points decision to become the new WTKA European champion at 54 Kgs.
Just two weeks later Ella was back in action, this time in Salford where she once again gave away age and a vast amount of experience against two time World Champion Rowena Van Klompenburg from Holland. On paper this should have been a much harder fight, but Ella once again made easy work of it, dominating from the start to take another landslide points victory.
Joining her on the show in Salford was Bury’s other, two time European champion, Lewis Bentley, also a student of St Gabriel’s. He faced a very tough fight against the North East superstar Brooks Sowerby. Lewis struggled to come to terms with the movement of Brooks, but showed his superior scoring ability and won a very close split decision.
Also in action on the Salford were 7 year old Alfie Speake who lost a very close split decision, and Harry Oldham 9, who won the area title in possibly the fight of the night.
All four fighters will be competing on the gyms own show on the 30th November in Ashton. Lewis will fight for the WTKA World title against a young Cypriot fighter, and Ella will be defending her title against another Cypriot.
GFC in Wigan, 8th June 2019
We had four fighters out competing at an international Muay Thai Boxing event in Wigan recently
Ella Thompstone & Lewis Bentley
First up undefeated St Gabrial’s student, Ella Thompstone moved to 14 fights 14 wins with a totally dominant second round stoppage of her older and heavier opponent from Middleton. Second up, another St Gab’s student and double European Champion, Lewis Bentley proved his class once again in his contest against the highly rated Razza from All Powers gym in Stockport. The fight was a very technical affair which started even but Lewis’ superior skills and strength took over from the halfway stage and ended up a onesided points victory. The fight was so good it received a standing ovation from everyone in the crowd at the end.
Next up, another undefeated fighter, Kieran Lee took a massive step up in class to fight another highly rated and very skill full fighter in Jason O’Hara from Imperial in Southport. The fight swung back and forth with Kieran taking an early lead, Jason coming back, but Kieran digging deep in the last round in a career best performance to take a career best win on points.
Finally for the gym, Adam Haslam faced the unknown Italian fighter Giosef Nassef. The Italian had a very unorthodox style, which meant a cautious start from Adam, who still was coming out on top in every exchange without taking to many chances whilst he got to grips with the Italians style. Then towards the end of the third round Adam unleashed one of the best timed head kicks you are likely to see, knocking his opponent clean out, referee not even bothering to count.
Four fights, four wins in dominant fashion once again underlining the gyms reputation as one of the very best in the country.
It’s been a busy September for local Thai Boxers from the GFC Gym in Bury. 11thSept saw two members Lewis Bentley and Ella Thompstone, both students of St Gabriel’s high school, competing in Scotland. There was initial disappointment as both their opponents came in overweight, but not wanting the trip to be for nothing, they both decided to fight anyway. First up was Lewis who showed all the skill and ability that has made him two times European champion in picking up a unanimous decision in a performance that once again earned rave reviews. Martin Jones of Origin Media, who photographs 80% of the Thai shows in the Country, stating, “every time is see this kid fight I am convinced he will be world champion, so cool and clinical with all the time in the world to deliver his shots.”. Next up Ella, who again dominated from the start consistently changing styles throughout the fight to pick up another landslide points victory. In another endorsement, Paul Spinks one of the countries busiest referees stated on his Social Media, “I don’t know what GFC do with these kids but every last one is amazing”.
Testing ourselves in Birmingham
Just three weeks later four of the gym fighters travelled to Birmingham. First up Anthony Hamer took a points victory in a see saw battle. Next up the gym’s other two times European champion, Lewis George proved way too strong for his French opponent, stopping him in the 5thround. Third up for the gym, Was Kellisha Dodds. Kellisha wasn’t supposed to be competing on this show and had actually had some time off ill, yet on Thursday night we got a call to say one of the girls competing for a European title had to withdraw so “would Kellisha take the fight?”. It took Kellisha about two seconds to give a very firm “YES”. The first three rounds were close but probably had Kellisha just ahead, despite fighting the French 7 x national champion, shower her class Kellisha the last two rounds to win unanimous and become new European champion. In doing so she joins her gym mates; Lewis George Lewis Bentley and Mackenzie Roberts in winning European titles this year. Last up was Ella Thompstone again, in her 8thfight this year, after having her first fight in Nov Last year. Ella would be competing for her first British title. Her opponent had twice as many fights as Ella and showed her experience in not allowing Ella to totally dominate has she pretty much had in all her previous fights. Ella was still to strong and once again came out a unanimous points winner. Martin Jones again commented, four fighters Four class performances, four wins, is there anything GFC can’t do?” There was more praise when Dean James, four times world champion stated on his social media, “Such a strong team, its pleasure to watch them do their stuff”.
Final third of the year.

Three juniors competing in the unified world champs in Italy at the end of October and then hopefully nine fighters competing in Barnsley on the 18thNovember.
