About the Instructors

Senior instructor Darren Phillips

Darren is a red armband 4th degree, who began training Thai Boxing in 1984 under Master Sken with Sandy Holt at the highly successful Bolton Thai Boxing Club. He began teaching after about a year's training and was a very active instructor there in the hay day of the Bolton Gym when they had people such as Phil Nurse, Bobby Beckles, Trevor Hine, Ste Reilly, John Taylor, Craig Howlin, Brian Power, Ste Sharples, all of whom were at one time or another at least British and some European champions. Darren retired from competition in 1991 after an unsuccessful attempt at the British Title, loosing against Chris Allen (who went on to become World Champion). Darren has also shared the ring with Eval Denton and Peter Cooke who both also went onto become world champions.

Maxine Phillips

Maxine began training in 1987 and is a red armband 2nd Degree, a former champion and at one point was the highest graded female in the country. Maxine was a pioneer of women's Thai Boxing in this country and her success is represented in the gym which has a high number of females training, at one point three of the gyms four red arm bands were female. Maxine currently teaches the junior classes.

Andy Thrasher

Whilst continuing to enjoy a sucessful fighting career, Andy has started teaching both private lessons and classes at GFC. Andy is an excellent asset to the GFC instructing team and naturally has a high understanding of what it takes to become a sucessful fighter.

Mark Rackham Mark Rackham

Mark began training in 2000, and from the start showed he had an excellent understanding of the technical aspect of Thai Boxing. Mark now takes the beginners class on a Wednesday night and hopes to expand his teaching soon.

Mike Williams

Mike came to GFC in 2001 after training at another gym. Mike has a history of coaching successfully in athletics and football to juniors. Mike has been helping in both the junior and adult classes and has proved an excellent asset to the GFC instructor's team, Mike now also takes the Junior Beginners class on Sunday.

Michael Howarth

Michael actually began training at GFC in 1996, but his career has been dogged by injury. Now back training full time, Michael has started to help out with some of the adult classes. Michael again has proven to have a very high understanding of the technical aspect of Thai Boxing and now takes the Sunday beginners class.
